Residence Life

The rivalries are fierce, the house spirit undeniable, and the memories are forever. Residence life at StFX is like something you’ve never experienced and The Students’ Union pulls out all the stops to make sure you have a fun, safe and exciting year. Each house has their own House President and VPs equipped with a killer House Council to plan sporting tournaments, charity balls, book clubs and crazy parties!

One of the best ways to get involved as a first or second year in residence is through your house council.
See below for the many positions you can apply for:

The Administrative/Finance Representative shall:

  • Keep accurate minutes of House Council meetings. They shall type a copy to be accessible to the house and one to submit to the VP-Student Relations as well as the House President within 7 days of the meeting.
  • Shall liaise with the Campus Radio Station, CFXU, on a regular basis updating them on upcoming house events.
  • Attend all meetings of the House Council and assist in the planning and implementation of all house events.

The Intramural Rep/ Varsity Representative shall:

  • Be responsible for making the students aware of the various intramural activities and to see that as many people as possible participate in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play.
  • Attend all meetings as required by each unit manager of the Student Intramural Office.
  • Promote both involvement in and support of varsity sports to members of the house.
  • Advertise for games (both @ X and away) while trying to get residents to increase their X Spirit by getting their residences to go out to the games.
  • Attend all meetings of the House Council and assist in the planning and implementation of all house events.

The Wellness Representative shall:

  • Perform all duties as assigned by the Food Bank Coordinator of the Students' Union.
  • Meet monthly with the Director of Health & Counseling.
  • Provide residents with condoms and health information while remaining confidential about issues which may be discussed.
  • Pass out any information/pamphlets as requested by the VP-Executive of the Students' Union
  • Sit on the Food Service Advisory Committee and attend all meetings of that committee.
  • Be responsible for distributing of notices and questionnaires, and posting information as required by the Food Service Advisory Committee.
  • Promote X-Helpline.
  • Attend all meetings of the House Council and assist in the planning and implementation of all house events.

The Environmental Representative shall:

  • Promote awareness off environmental issues within the house and be responsible for all aspects of environmental action as decided by the House Council.
  • Perform all duties as assigned by the Students’ Union Environmental Officer.
  • Shall be responsible for promoting responsible waste management within their residence.
  • Meet monthly with the Environmental Officer
  • Attend all meetings of the House Council and assist in the planning and implementation of all house events.

The Communications Representative shall:

  • Helps promote house events (i.e. putting up posters and organizing promotions). Makes an effort to talk to everyone to get them participating.
  • To organize volunteers for all events and to perform advertising, scheduling, and after event follow-up which acknowledges all those who assisted in the event and clean-up.
  • Be responsible for assisting the House Council in plan fundraising events for a charity(s) as well as fundraising for the house and keep the house informed on the status of the charity.
  • Attend all meetings called by the Marketing Managers of the Students’ Union.
  • Be responsible for posting house news on the House Council bulletin board.
  • Attend all meetings of the House Council and assist in the planning and implementation of all house events.

The Equity and Diversity Representative shall:

  • Receive equity training (coordinated by the Equity Advisor and the Students’ Union Equity Advocate)
  • Promote safe and inclusive house activities potentially including, but not limited to:
  • Organizing an event to celebrate various history months (Women's, Mi’kmaq, African-Canadian)
  • Inviting speakers into the house (ex. the Aboriginal Student Advisor, LGBT Advisor, International Student Advisor, Black Student Advisor- or potentially a student or community member)
  • Co-ordinate House participation in existing campus activities and events around promoting diversity and understanding.
  • Voice concerns about inequitable and/or offensive house activities to both house council and potentially to the Students Union Equity Officer if the need arises.
  • Attend all meetings of the House Council and assist in the planning and implementation of all house events.

The Spiritual Representative shall:

  • Arrange all house religious functions (any denomination) and find people to participate in the different duties that are required to be performed at these ceremonies.
  • Inform members of the house of any special Masses or other religious ceremonies or changes in these times.
  • Encourage members of the house to practice their own religion.
  • Attend all meetings as required by the University Chaplains.
  • Attend all meetings of the House Council and assist in the planning and implementation of all house events.

The Frosh Representative Shall:

  • Attend all required meeting with the Frosh Councillor
  • Shall be an advocate for the needs of freshmen students in their respective house
  • Shall ensure all events held in House are inclusive for first year students.
