The U

Welcome to the St Francis Xavier University Students’ Union (The U). The U is a non-profit organization that provides services, events, societies and advocacy work, amongst much more for the students of St FX. The U is an organization led for students by students. It consists of over 200 employees and many more volunteers. The character of The U can be demonstrated in our core values:

– Servant Leadership to Students
– Trust, Integrity and Respect
– Transparency and Accountability
– Fun, Inclusive Student Engagement
– Sustainable, Innovative Practices

What does the U do for you?

The U advocates for the rights of the students of St FX within our university, within the Antigonish community and to the provincial and federal governments. Within the St FX community Students’ Union representatives sit on major committees to ensure the needs of students are a priority and taken into account in all decisions made at our university. These committees include the Board of Governors, Senate, Event Review Committee and many more. The Students’ Union also represents post secondary education issues of St FX students in external advocacy work through the provincial and federal lobbying groups Alliance of Nova Scotia Student Associations (ANSSA) and Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA). See the Lobbying Section of theu.ca for more information.

The U offers many services to help St FX students have their best university experience, even during the tough times. These services include a food resource centre; off-campus housing assistance, environmental advocacy through the environmental office; DriveU, a student drive home services and a photo dark room. The Students’ Union also hosts over 100 student societies focused on advocacy, sports, arts, academic programs and just sharing a common passion. Check out the societies and look for one that appeals to you on society night- if you can’t find the one you’re looking for- you’re open to start it yourself! The Union Station Clothing Store is also operated by the Students’ Union- check it out on the 2nd floor, SUB and grab some great X gear- much of it designed by X-students themselves.

CFXU, St FX’s campus radio station, and the Xaverian Weekly, the student-led campus newspaper, are both owned and operated by the Students’ Union and its employees. CFXU and the Weekly provide students a great way to get involved on campus and learn more about what’s going on in the X-community. The equity office, led by the SU Equity Officer, works to ensure the Students’ Union and St FX community are providing equitable and inclusive events & services on campus.

In addition to founding and upholding the X-Ring tradition and X-Ring ceremony, the U is responsible for providing St FX students with an incredible frosh week (rated #1 in Canada by MTV), the annual Winter Ball, awesome concerts all year long, a Grad trip to the sunny tropics, Green Gig and many more stellar events. The U owns & operates the on-campus bar, Golden X Inn where students can enjoy a variety of musical events including Wednesday night open mic, CFXU Thursday nights and Fridays at the Inn as well as great concerts throughout the year.

The St FX Students’ Union is here for YOU. We’re always looking to improve the organization to best meet the needs of St FX students. If you have any ideas, questions or concerns please feel free to contact the organization.

See you at the Inn!
