Details of organization: The Xaverian Weekly is the student newspaper at St Francis Xavier University. We print every Thursday, covering a wide range of campus news, culture and sports, as well as trying to put a student perspective on provincial, national and international issues of interest. Our office is located in the basement of the student union building (Bloomfield Centre). Take a left down the hallway by the bookstore. Our volunteer meetings are every Monday at 6 p.m.

Volunteer opportunities: The Xaverian Weekly has many volunteer opportunities to suit the interests and talents you might have. Whether it be writing, editing, graphic design, photography or advertising, the newspaper is a great way to get your feet wet, or immerse yourself, in the always entertaining and ever-changing world of journalism. With an experienced and talented staff, we can help you foster many different skills that you will find useful for the future, even if you don't want to be a journalist. So if you want to join our team, we'll find a place to use your talents and enthusiasm!

Volunteer Opportunities: Many opportunities! Audition for a part in any of the productions by contacting Ed Thomason. If stage management or the technical aspects are of interest contact Ian Pygott. If you wish to volunteer in the front of house (box office, bar, ushering, etc, etc) or wardrobe contact Madonna. We generally have a volunteer orientation session around the second week of September. Details will be available at a later date. Name of Organization: STUDENTS’ UNION STUDENT FOOD BANK

Details of Organization: The Student Food Bank is a completely student run service that supplies students with food when in need. It is completely confidential and anonymous.

Volunteer Opportunities: The Student Food Bank is always looking for volunteers to run the operation. You are in charge of stocking shelves, making sure there are enough bags to give out, and recording id numbers to ensure students are not coming back more than once a week. You are required to volunteer for at least one hour a week at the food bank.

Details of Organization: X-Helpline is a completely confidential, non judgmental and student run phone line. It provides confidential and anonymous peer counseling. X-helpline volunteers are there to listen and provide a non threatening opportunity for callers to express themselves and begin to work toward resolution of their own.

Volunteer Opportunities: In September, we will be looking for interested students to commit to a weekend of training and then to “man” the phone approximately once a month.

Details of Organization: A student service that provides tutors to StFX students on volunteer basis.

Volunteer Opportunities: Tutors work on a need by need basis. Students are responsible to contact the tutor themselves and schedule sessions at appropriate times.

Details of Organization: We are a volunteer organization offering sport training and competition for persons with a cognitive disability. We run a variety of sports (bowling, swimming, track and field, floor hockey, soccer, Masters triathlon, speed skating) throughout the year. We are a member of Special Olympics Nova Scotia

Volunteer Opportunities: We require volunteers in many of our programs. Each program has a different schedule (bowling - September to April) (track and field March - July) etc. We have opportunities in coaching and organizing.

Name of Organization: SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM

Details of Organization: Offers 3 core programs: 1) Course Based Service Learning-service or hands-on experience in the community as part of a course. This happens in many disciplines and all years of study. Students will learn about these opportunities through course professors. All course-based experiences include an assignment which is graded by the professor. 2) IDS 306 Service Learning Theory and Practice is a 3-credit course offered in the fall term. This course is open to third and fourth year students. Student complete at least 30 hours of service in the local community and meet in class to discuss and learn from their experiences. See the Academic Calendar for more information. 3) Immersion Service Learning – service experiences in a cross-cultural experience. All experiences are group experiences with a faculty leader. There will be 7 experiences offered in 2009-20109: Cuba, Mexico, Grenada, Guatemala, and L’Arche Ottawa are offered during Reading Week. Immersion in Romania and Belize will be offered at the end of term. Students MUST apply to the program; participation is not automatic. Application deadline is October 30th. Volunteer Opportunities: The Service Learning Student Society offers volunteer opportunities. They organize short-term group events, such as a Halloween party at the seniors home with preschoolers or a beach clean up with elementary school children. Details of Organization: The Aboriginal Student Advisor's Office works closely with the Aboriginal Students @ X Society which puts on two major events each academic year, as well as participating in various class presentations, research opportunities and social get togethers. The Aboriginal Student Lounge, Camden 103 is the headquarters and official resource and relaxation lounge for Aboriginal Students @ X. Details of Organization: StFX Intramurals main objective is to provide quality sports programs for students and staff, with an emphasis on student participation and sportsmanship in a safe environment. StFX Intramurals provides the opportunity for students and staff to participate in team and individual sports through a variety of leagues and tournaments, in addition to a variety of ‘free-play’ and instructional opportunities. All students are strongly encouraged to participate in Intramural activities and to make daily physical activity a part of their everyday lives. Through the Program, students are also provided the opportunity to administer, work and volunteer, thus gaining a valuable experience from it.

Volunteer Opportunities: Currently over 100 students per year are involved in the organization and administration of the StFX Intramural program as activity supervisors, sport officials, scorekeepers and timekeepers. StFX Intramurals wants to involve as many students as possible - the more students involved in student programming the better! Details of Organization: Not for Profit, registered charitable organization providing ballet, creative movement, jazz, lyrical, tap, hip hop step dance, ball room classes to over 400 members age 3 to adult including many StFX students.We currently provide part time employment as instructors to five StFX Students who have extensive dance training and teaching experience. ACDA also supports and assists the 12 member StFX Dance team.

Volunteer Opportunities: Students with experience in dance and working with children could assist with young children's classes, students with marketing, business or IT skills could help the volunteer board of directors promote the organization.In the past, some StFX Service learning studnts have volunteered with us for credit.

 

Name of Organization: ANTIGONISH HIGHLAND SKATEBOARDING ASSOCIATON

Details of Organization: Antigionish Highland Skateboarding Association (AHSA) promotes skateboarding and similar action sports in the Antigonish area, and is working with local municipalities to develop a world-class concrete skateboard park in Antigonish. AHSA provides leadership opportunities for youth and engages volunteers in activities such as planning field trips, fundraising, designing and building a float for the Antigonish Highland Games parade, etc. AHSA supports other community activities such as the Lions highway cleanup, Earth Day river cleanup (with Town of Antigonish & StFX Student Environment Committee), and Antigonish Ride, a local group that organizes downhill mountain bike races. AHSA has over 170 members and a board of directors made up of youth and adults. Board meets the first Monday of each month & fundraising/planning meetings are held as needed. Everyone welcome.
