November 28th, 2017:
Yesterday evening, university President Dr. Kent MacDonald sent an email to the campus community regarding the recent allegations of sexual assault. The Students’ Union does not support any form of sexualized violence and our main priority throughout these investigations has been, as always, student safety.
The Union supports the university’s Sexual Violence Policy and it is our duty to ensure that the policy is adhered to. It is extremely important that when adhering to the policy’s victim-centred approach, the community acknowledges the responsibility of maintaining confidential aspects of the allegation in the interest of the survivors.
We encourage continued discussion, awareness, and education of sexual violence prevention on university campuses. Earlier this year, the Union partnered with the Health and Counselling centre to provide students with Bringing in the Bystander training. Increased efforts have been taken to actively redress generations of institutionalized power complexes that have perpetuated and allowed for sexualized violence to fester.
We encourage all students to contact email@example.com to receive training so that we as a community can be proactive bystanders. Training is an incredibly valuable resource however the importance of teaching individuals to not rape cannot be left unsaid. Explicit, direct consent is absolutely mandatory every single time.
These are not isolated incidents of assaults at StFX, nor are they at institutions in Canada, or in our broader society. These happen every single day. It is, however, time to say no more. The Union endorses the Women’s Resource Centre's '16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence' campaign.
